MODEL BUILDING TIPS

This model will require more than one sitting to build it. We advise to pause between different stages as you work, especially when you come to gluing. The white glue softens the paper and it may lead to misshapen parts if you do not allow them to dry well before proceeding further with assembling. Click here to watch our paper model building tips.

ABOUT THIS LANDMARK

Stonehenge, located on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, is a prehistoric monument of exceptional historical significance. Archaeologists believe it was constructed in several stages, with the earliest known major works dating from about 3000 BCE. The most iconic part of Stonehenge, the massive standing stones, were erected around 2500 BCE.

The structure consists of a ring of standing stones, each approximately 13 feet (4 meters) high, seven feet (2.1 meters) wide, and weighing around 25 tons. The stones are set within earthworks in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred tumuli (burial mounds).

The purpose of Stonehenge is not definitively known, leading to much speculation. It is thought to have been used as an astronomical observatory or for religious rituals linked to the solstices and equinoxes. Recent discoveries suggest it may have also been a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The alignment of the stones with the sunrise of the summer solstice and the sunset of the winter solstice indicates a sophisticated understanding of celestial events.

Stonehenge is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is legally protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
